FAQ

QuestionWhat is the relevance of FICESSA?
Answer Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) has become home to more than a quarter of the world’s undernourished people, based on The State of Food Insecurity in the World 2014 report produced by FAO. Given that land conversion for industrial crops (ICs) in SSA often happens in areas that are barley food self-sufficient, increasing our knowledge of the many complex feedbacks between food security and IC expansion can support efforts to reduce undernourishment in the region.

The project can feed in global objectives, such as the first Millennium Development Goals, by Eradicating Extreme Poverty and Hunger. It could also contribute knowledge to successfully implement initiatives such as the Zero Hunger Challenge launched by the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in 2012, which seeks to achieve 100% access to adequate food all year round and 100% increase in smallholder productivity and income.
QuestionWho benefit from FICESSA
Answer The project seeks to provide relevant knowledge to multiple stakeholders within the region, from smallholders to policy-makers, the private sector and civil society.

Policy-makers, can benefit from the better understanding of the complex relationship between industrial crop (IC) expansion and food security, helping them assimilate into their policy development process a holistic view of these interactions. Stakeholders from the private sector can obtain a better understanding of the performance and impact of their operations. Stakeholders from the civil society could strengthen the knowledge basis for the support packages they currently offer throughout the region.
QuestionHow can I get involved in FICESSA?
Answer We are interested to expand our FICESSA network, whether this includes new research aspect or dissemination of key results. Please get in touch with the appropriate FICESSA member to assess how your involvement can contribute to this project.
