Greetings from the chair of the 47th JSB

It is my great honor and pleasure to introduce the 47th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society for Biomaterials (47th JSB), held at Tokyo Tama-Mirai-Messe, Hachioji, Tokyo, from November 9 to 11, 2025.

The Japanese Society for Biomaterials was established on December 4, 1978, to develop and improve science and technology related to materials used in living organisms and their applications. As an interdisciplinary field that combines different fields such as medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy, and science and engineering, and aiming to realize medical development and improve patients’ quality of life (QOL) through practical application, the Society is composed of approximately 1,600 members from a wide range of specialties, including researchers from universities, national and public research institutes, and companies, regulatory authorities, as well as clinical doctors and dentists. At the annual meeting held in November, more than 700 participants gave more than 400 presentations. We are deeply grateful for this, as it is entirely thanks to the companies that have provided exceptional support and assistance to the Japanese Society for Biomaterials daily.

The venue of the 47th JSB, Tokyo Tama-Mirai-Messe, is a new facility opened in 2022 and is a few minutes’ walk from Hachioji Station. Hachioji is conveniently located about 40 minutes from Shinjuku and Yokohama by train. It is also characterized by its rich nature, including Mount Takao, which is popular among foreigners, if you go a little further. In addition, there are development centers of medical device manufacturers and universities with biomaterial researchers in the vicinity, so we think it is an excellent place for biomaterial researchers from Japan and abroad to gather.

The theme of this meeting is “Fly, Biomaterials - Challengers pioneering new fields-”. The Japanese Society for Biomaterials has contributed to creating unique biomaterials such as antithrombotic and biocompatible materials, tissue engineering using cell sheets, and nanoparticle drug delivery systems, pioneering new medical fields. In recent years, the scope of biomaterials has expanded beyond medicine. For example, the techniques in tissue engineering have been applied to cellular foods (so-called cultured meat) and cell culture under zero gravity conditions in outer space, expanding into new fields. Eventually, a new movement emerged in which diverse researchers were born, working not only in domestic academia but also overseas and launching startups. Therefore, this meeting will focus on these new research areas and researchers in various fields, and we are planning an attractive program for participants to learn about the latest developments in biomaterials, which are making great leaps forward. In addition, we are planning an event for young researchers on the afternoon of November 9, 2025, and hope to foster biomaterials researchers who will open new research areas. In addition, Hachioji city has development centers of medical device companies and academic researchers in biomaterials.

This meeting is based on membership fees, but to make it fruitful, we cannot cover all expenses with membership fees alone. We sincerely ask for your support in holding the conference.

Yours sincerely,
Tatsuya Shimizu, M.D., Ph.D.
